API terms of use
The rules for the API, the bulk exports and the widget. In short: credit the sources, link back, share alike where the ODbL applies, and don't overload the service.
Version 1, 31 October 2026. Applies to everything under /api/ and /widget/ on outdoors.keptsimple.com.au.
1. Licence of the data
The data is compiled from open sources, and each record keeps the licence of the sources it uses. Every record lists them in licence.licences and licence.sources.
- Open Database License (ODbL 1.0). This applies to records containing OpenStreetMap-derived content (
licence.shareAlike: true). The database is © OpenStreetMap contributors, and our derived database is also offered under the ODbL. If you publicly use a database adapted from it, you must offer that adapted database under the ODbL, keep it open, and give attribution. Maps, lists and other Produced Works need attribution only. - Creative Commons Attribution. This covers government data: NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (CC BY 4.0), NSW Spatial Services Points of Interest (CC BY 3.0 AU), Parks Victoria via DataVic (CC BY 4.0), Australian Bureau of Statistics ASGS 2021 (CC BY 4.0) and Forestry Corporation of NSW (CC BY). You must give attribution and say whether you changed the data.
- Scout and Guide venues. Names, notes and links come from each branch's official page. Use them as factual reference only and link to the listing or the branch page.
2. Attribution you must show
Wherever you display records, show the licence.attribution text for those records. For many records, you can show the combined meta.attribution instead. Put it close to the data, for example in a map's attribution control or under a list. It must be legible and must link to the licences where your medium allows. Please also link each campsite to its url on Outdoors Kept Simple.
3. Fair use
Access is free and needs no key. Don't send more than about 120 requests a minute per IP to the live endpoints. Cache responses for at least an hour, and use the bulk exports for syncing or offline use. Don't try to get around the limit. We may block traffic that harms the service. If you need more, ask for a partner key.
4. Accuracy and safety
We provide the data as is, with no warranty. Sites close, fees change and access depends on weather, fire and the land manager. Tell your users to check with the land manager before they travel. We are not liable for any loss arising from use of the data, to the extent the law allows.
5. Changes
Within /api/v1 we only add fields. A breaking change gets a new version path, and the old version stays up for at least six months. We may update these terms. Material changes will be noted on the developer page.
6. The widget
You may embed the widget on any site that follows these terms. Keep the attribution footer and the links back to listings visible.
